Sports Premium

Our school is firmly committed to promoting the significant value of Physical Education & Sports to the health and wellbeing of our children. Based upon the multitude of verified and reported research studies conducted by both Government-financed and independent scientific specialist investigation, it is only right and appropriate that we should endorse the prescribed concept of an innovative, varied PE curriculum tied to extra-curricular opportunities - such provision of learning has been extensively tried and tested nationally and abroad, with the demonstration to other schools of its positive influence upon the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of children.

Our Primary PE & Sports Premium funding will enable us to develop our subject-specific provision through whole school staff professional development and support for Subject Leader management to ensure that we are continually attaining a high quality, sustainable model of delivery that impacts considerably upon active healthy lifestyles. Furthermore, it underlines our school’s commitment to demonstrate how such invaluable state funding can prove to be a vital aid in terms of assisting our school’s fundamental aim of supporting whole child and school development – this all remains in keeping with our distinct Catholic values that impact considerably upon London 2012 and the legacy values associated with the Olympic & Paralympic Games.

Definition of Primary PE & Sports Premium

The Coalition Government dedicated state funding of £150 million each year from 2013 to 2016 to provide new and substantial primary school sports funding to address improvements within the provision of active healthy lifestyles. The funding is jointly provided by the Department for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sports. The funding is directly attributed to primary schools who are expected to audit current provision and match spending towards a marriage of government expectations and sustainable school-specific subject needs and interests. The funding is ring-fenced with schools accountable for final spend and reporting of impact, as reinforced by published Ofsted inspection criteria.

Swimming and Water Safety

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres

  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]

  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

For the 2017 to 2018 academic year, schools are required to publish how many pupils within their Year 6 cohort are meeting the national curriculum requirement to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres using a range of strokes effectively and perform self- rescue in different water-based situations.
